Gambrinus Beer

The legendary beer king Gambrinus is inextricably linked to the history of beer production in Ukraine. Almost everyone who has heard of Odesa knows about the Gambrinus bar, which existed before the revolution and is still in operation today, but not everyone knows that it owes its name to Gambrinus beer.
Back in 1890, the Odesa City Council issued a permit to Wilhelm Johannowicz Sanzenbacher to set up a brewery. It was this time that can be considered the beginning of the history of Gambrinus beer production. It was brewed according to classical technology and aged for 60 days, bottled in oak barrels and branded bottles with porcelain corks. The plant’s products were awarded two silver and eight gold medals at international exhibitions.
During the turbulent times, the plant stopped working several times, even for nine years in 1916, but production was resumed in 1925. Interesting volumes: it is known that in 1983, Odesa Brewery No. 1 brewed 2.141 million decaliters of beer.
At the turn of the century in 2000, the plant was on the verge of bankruptcy due to the economic crisis. Gambrinus found some resources and investors to continue its work, but in 2004 production was suspended, as it was thought at the time, for good. They lacked resources and could not compete with cheap beer from large producers.
But now, in 2023, the legendary Odesa brewery Gambrunus has been rebuilt. At a completely new level, with state-of-the-art equipment, the best brewing technologies, and the best industry professionals. Moreover, the same beer recipes for the most popular beers have been found, restored and improved. Six classic beers are already being produced, and today the technologists are already working on creating new unique beers mainly from Ukrainian raw materials to ensure that the “Gambrinus” was no less legendary as the beer king from its name.
